How amazing! I’M A PRETTY LITTLE BLACK GIRL! book is holding steady on AMAZON as NUMBER #1 in African American storybooks!
When I first decided to create this book for our little Black girls, I was either rejected by every major publisher, or told that I needed to change the title and the text to make it more “universal”. In other words, take out the description of “Black” in the title. I responded to one particular publisher, that “if I did that, then it would defeat the very purpose of the book designed to celebrate little Black girls” — thus, alienating the very audience that I want to attract with the intent of love and honor. It is difficult to get publishers to see that the old ways of reaching an audience don’t work anymore. And when there is no past result by which to measure success in a new arena, there is no proof of what can be done in a new way, with new ideas.
But I saw the void.
I knew that there is a strong yearning and desire for us to be celebrated in books just as we are — and happily! I listened to my own heart. And the audience for the book has responded in kind. As this holds true, the love you take is equal to the love you make. I’M A PRETTY LITTLE BLACK GIRL! has reached and maintains at NUMBER #1 ON AMAZON in African American books. Because I LOVE our girls. Here now, is a book on the shelves that didn’t exist before in this way, with this bold title. And I want our girls to see themselves in a book created just for them with bright, happy colors laced with JOY!
Go, little Black girls! You are awesome, indeed. You will always be number one.
